About MERCEDES, A CONTAINER TO SYRIA AND HOW I WANT TO HELP EMERGING DESIGNERS

Hi dears,

Since the last time I wrote so many things have happened and all of them are good, good!!.. Let me share with you not necessarily in chronological order.

A CONTAINER TO SYRIA

Well, first of all, I want to thank again all the donors that joined me to collect items to send the container to Syria. It was a total success!!! I received so many calls, so much help, so many messages… It was amazing! My house turned into a little extension of Jebel Ali. Lol. I requested a day off to be able to pack and organize the donations. In boxes I was able to fit more stuff in height than if kept in bags. Red Crescent sent volunteers to pick up everything- yep! You read it well.. The trucks are also volunteering. Our truck was full in 4 stops. My house was the first stop. It is very touchy to see how so many people got involved and to realise how where there is a will there is a way. My company was a great support for the cause too and many of my colleagues brought me their things. I feel blessed and proud.

A CONTAINER TO SYRIA

I´M MERCEDES

Another highlight I wanted to share with you and it is somehow related to how I want to help designers shine, happened at Leila Heller´s Gallery in Al Quoz. Mercedes Benz, the german cars, organized an event called ¨She´s Mercedes¨ mixing art, fashion, and a lovely white car- an E-Class.

I enjoyed it very much. It was my first time in that particular gallery and I was impressed with some of its pieces. I loved the metallic barely-there architectures hanging from the main room. The artist is called Afruz Amighi.

Also I liked the complex simplicity of the pieces of  Hadieh Shafie, made with rolls of paper of different diameters and colours.

My favourite pieces though I didnt get the name of the artist.. It was a twisted gotic truck.. I know it sounds weird but it was precisely that. And also a glass composition over the wall that seemed like water splashing. It was a lot of tiny pieces in perfect order with their different colours popping out.

In the main room, the car was showcased and also my lovely Essa Wala was there showing his unique pieces. I bought one of them. This bluish leopard print summer coat that looks good with everything I style it with it is his creation. I wore it once already and I received so many compliments. He is just that good!

SHE´S MERCEDES

There was also a corner for S*uce, and area for Hanah with bags done in the UAE that look great (made out of camel leather) and other for Hagar & India. The gourmet corner had cakes and cupcakes from Gossip- tres jolie for me to eat!

It was a nice event, maybe too quiet but Ramadan was around the corner and everyone had lunch and dinner plans. The three main topics though seemed a bit disconnected from one another. I get everything is meant to be Luxurious but there was not a story connecting the dots. Or maybe, I wasnot able to see it!

Viola- a beautiful soul that happens to be one of my favourite bloggers in Dubai was there. It is always a pleasure to see her, she is so much fun to have around and I love her vision of things. Dont miss your chance to follow her in this link or in Insta.

EUSHOPIA

Talking to Viola about Eushopia- This project is like a baby for me, I can´t help but to tell everyone about it!- she told me she wanted to do something similar in the past but didn´t work out. I really want to know what happened but I won´t let it stop me. When you are starting a new business, you feel like in an emotional roller-coaster. Some days, up in the sky, some others, down, insecure, fragile.. I want to learn from everything and from everyone that comes my way. From some time already I see gurus in disguise in my friends, family and even unknown people. It is amazing and beautiful to see how much wisdom there is out there when you are open to it.

Meeting and talking to designers is awesome and I enjoying it so much. Their insights help me shape the platform, understand their needs and make something great for them. That is the leit- motiv of Eushopia and why it all started. I feel blessed to have this mission. It makes me happy to be able to help.

If you know designers that you think they are amazing and you want us to get in touch with them, link them with our landing page. There there are three buttons- for designers, for people recommending a designer and for people loving unique items emerging designers create. Please feel free to share it with your friends and family. You will definitely be doing me a big favour and I will be forever grateful. But also you will be helping them. 🙂

Eushopia.ae

This week there has been also a very cool event. The graduation of Esmod, but I will tell you about it in a different post, because this post ended being too long. Lol

By the way, Ramadan just started – I wrote some posts for StoneHill´s blog. I invite you to check the first one that has beeen already posted. I have always been very curious about religions and for this post I did some research that I enjoyed a lot. Now I hope you also enjoy it and I wish you a..

Ramadan Kareem!

Michael Kors

Michael Kors and Mall of the Emirates are celebrating!

Recently I went to the Michael Kors store in Mall of the Emirates for a very nice event. The Mall is on its 10 anniversary and Michael Kors did a special line of bags as a celebration.

The shop was nicely decorated exposing the special “10th Year of MOE” collection and all the rest of the standard collection. Maria Elena, my partner in crime came along also. We enjoyed the drinks and the cute canapes, and got to see some other fellow bloggers. I was coming right after work, exhausted and tired but I must say that it was worthy just to have some social life and get to see new things. Some times, when deadlines are in your neck, you get that very dangerous tunnel vision and stop going out, thinking constantly in work and office stuff.

This came as a very nice break, that made me realise that I need to stop and smell the roses, in my case,.. enjoy the amazing city I live in.

I am going to leave you with some pics of the event, but hey! I work in education, and you can not miss my notes about Michael Kors, the brand, the man and a little bit about all in between.

About Michael Kors

  • Was born Karl Anderson Jr, but later changed his name and also his surname as her mother remarried Bill Kors. From Karl Anderson Jr to Michael David Kors.
  • He is a Leo (09/08/1959)
  • Started studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology but never finished.
  • His mom was a model, there you might have some “fashionable” influence.
  • From when he was 5 he showed signs of fashion designer vocation.. He drew the wedding dress of his mom for her second wedding.
  • When a teenager, he was producing and selling his clothes from the basement of his house.
  • He started to work in a Boutique that allowed him to start selling his products, eventually Bergdorf Goodman liked his designs and got to be showcased in buyers meetings.
  • 1981 Michael Kors launched his brand for womenswear.
  • 1993 hit hard with bankruptcy. The brand stopped and recover only in 1997 creating a cheaper line.
  • 1997 Michael Kors joined Celine for women’s ready to wear.
  • 2002 The menswear line is launched.
  • 2003 Michael Kors left Celine.
  • 2011 Michael Kors married his long time partner Lance LePere.
  • Now the brand has over 350 shops around the world.
  • Kors has participated in Project Runway as judge and has been nominated many times in Times magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the World.
  • 2013 He received the Couture Council Award. he also has the Geoffrey Beene lifetime achievement award from CFDA.
  • He is a good person.. he worked for years with charities (“God’s love we deliver” to take care of feeding HIV and AIDs patients) and Cancer Research (Oliver R. Grace Award by the Cancer Research Institute).
  • Today the brand has two main lines.. the Michael Kors luxury collection and the Michael, accessible luxury collection.
  • He has a personal wealth of over a billion dollars according to Forbes.

I always find inspiring to know about the designers lives. Michael Kors is like a modern phoenix, coming back to life after bankruptcy must not be easy, but talent and perseverance made him back to the top.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHOEMART!

Hi dears,

Dubai is so full of events, some times it is hard to keep up with all that happens here. For example, Shoemart celebrated just recently its 25 years. This shoe company has been already quite a while in Dubai, right? They have shops in most of the malls I like. For this anniversary, they organised an event to show their new collection for Spring / Summer 2015 with their new face, Maya Diab. She is a Lebanese actress, singer and fashion icon.

The event had two violinists playing amazingly and the music of the Dj’s after it was not bad at all. The collection was very fresh, with very bright colors and some of the very chunky soles in white plastic that are so in vogue. They also showed ballerinas and sport shoes in futuristic silver and golden shades.

There were shoes shown for every occasion… for the office, for dinner out with your better half, to go to the beach with your gang, for your day off lazing around doing nothing.. What I like most about Shoemart is that their shoes are very affordable, so you always end up buying an extra pair even if it was not on your initial list. And even if they are cheap, they don’t look cheap, which is I think the secret to their success in sales.

Well dears, I have put together some of the best pics in the collage above to be able to show you a bit of what the night held.  I fell in love with the metallic with diamond appliques shoes of the presenter -also from Shoemart- and the black transparent sandals from Maya Diab…I would say they are part of the Fantasy collection if I would be asked. They are both gorgeous don’t you think?

FASHION FORWARD 2015 DESIGNER : AIISHA RAMADAN

Hi dears,

In case you didn’t know her as yet, let me introduce you to Aiisha Ramadan, the designer, the fashion guru in this side and in the other side of the Atlantic Ocean ( actually also on the other side of the Pacific Ocean too!.. L.A.).

She has dressed some of those celebrities every designer dreams to dress.. Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Teron, Paris Hilton, Raya Abichared.. and even a blogger fellow of mine.. Simone Heng. And all this, in really a very short time. That is due to what I call – either you have it, either you don’t -Talent.

Born in Lebanon, she followed her instinct and launched her brand AIISHA in 2006. Ever since, she has won a lot of prizes and awards. The one that I find cooler ..when she was named as one of the 30 Most Awesome Women in the Arab World in 2009 ( Yallah!)  and at the recent Women Leaders UAE2015 she won in the category of Contemporary Fashion designer. There is many more..kind of like karma.. She dresses the beautiful people going to the Oscars, the Grammy’s etc..and all that effort to make them shine, pays back.

Aiisha Ramadan will be showing her collection in this coming Fashion Forward (Register if you havent already. This year is from the 10 to the 13th of April). The collection is called Queen of Scotts and let me tell you it is simply beautiful and clean. The silhouettes are straight, embracing the models bodies and to me, they are very elegant and timeless. She picked strong colors: Purple, reds, blues, blacks, greens.. all in perfect harmony with the embellishments. Not too much, not too little.. just perfect.

Here you have some of the pics of this gorgeous collection.. Let me know your thoughts. Do you like them? When would you use them? Which one is your favorite?

Lots of Luv,

Araceli

FINALLY URBAN STREET STYLE IN DUBAI.. At SOLE DXB

Hi dears!!

This last weekend at the site where our awaited D3 -Dubai Design District- is being built there was a rather unconventional event. What made it different was that, for once ,it was not totally glamorous and bling bling! It was street style but not with high heels and Gucci bags in the middle of Dubai Marina.. It was urban street style as in New York, London or Madrid ( yep!  we also have!).

V. I. S: Very Important Sneakers

The total king of the event were the sneakers.. all over, there were shops selling or just displaying them. The other king was the sun.. high up on Friday morning and we were all missing some shade. At the Ray Ban booth we even helped a girl that was feeling dizzy because of too much sun and heat.

Me and my partner in crime, Maria Elena,  walked all the booths.. we saw the shoes, the sneakers, the clothes, the bags, the sunnies,  the bicycles, the puma shop, the food stalls, the caps, the Minis.. I love the Minis, and the reinvention of the gipsy van using them was so cool!

WWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMWWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COM URBAN STREET STYLEUrban Art

There were some graffiti artists working to give the total alternative urban look to the event.. Remi Rough was working on a quite high wall and needed a lift to create his abstract griffitis. Antoine Tavaglione or Tava was having fun with a pink Garfield close to our soles.. we also had fun as you can see!

WWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMWWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMBooths & more

Right in the center, there was a basketball field where people could play and also areas to skateboard around. The shops where hosted in containers, versatile, mobile, easy to transport and with the total urban look. The Puma and the Reebok were my favorites. The Puma because of the bikes. The Reebok one because it was bringing all the nostalgia back to me.. see why?.. Who didn’t have one of these babies in our teenager years?

WWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMMy thoughts

As usual I have some comments on Sole DXB.. The price was ok ( 50 Dhs) but it was quite difficult to reach. If you do not have a car with an updated GPS, all I can say, is Good luck!. The D3 is all mystery for me and I really wanted to see the insides and heart of the Design district but all of it is blocked as it is still in construction. I understand the restriction to enter as there is still a lot of works going on and it would be a liability and a risk to allow visitors in. As it was not as ready, I would have maybe chosen a different location.. closer to Dubai.

The sun and the heat was an issue. For next year please some “sunbrellas” or some more shade. Water and drinks were available for free and that was a big plus!. People were nice and ambiance was really great. There were supposed to be talks, but they were delayed and we decided that we will skip them because the place looked really “in the process” and we were not sure how long would it take to get finished. Same thing happened with The Level Shoe District.. Not even close to ready by the time we left.

I know we know that all the visitors to any venue or event in Dubai tend to come late ( actually very late), but I still find it too bad that the organizers are not ready when they are supposed to.

Well, that is all for now. If you have any questions or comments you would want to add, please feel free in the comment section.

Lots of luv,

Araceli

CARLOS VIGIL

Hi dears!

This is the second part of the blog post from the Taste of Peru event. Everything was so good on that day that it well deserves 2 blog posts. And Carlos Vigil  has to have one for him alone!. He is the other designer showcasing his amazing work at the catwalk in Madinat Jumeirah.

Carlos has been working in fashion for over 28 years. He is into Haute Couture and Pret a Porter. I got amazed by the details of the dresses, having used ribbon to criss cross over the silks and chiffons giving shape and definition with its intrincacy.. and all of it it is done by hand. I dont think there is any other way in this case. Simply beautiful!! He used colours I love ( purples, blues…) and to close the runway, a delicate bridal gown.

DSC08091

The name of the collection says it all – Metropolis- and it is inspired by the sky-scrapers of big cities and modern architecture. The patterns created by the criss cross and the embroidery definitely remind me of towers (just today I was in JBR and I was seeing dresses in every tower, lol).

The silhouttes are very sensual and feminine and it is not a surprise that between his clientele you can find all sort of celebrities, peruvian and international.

What I learnt in the press kit is that the Atelier is still a family business run by him and his three daughters : Cinthia, Lisseth and Vanessa, each of them specialised in one creative area (no accountants in this family!).

I have put together the pics of the catalogue. You can enjoy mine on the Facebook page.

Go, check, like and share at your will!

MY TAKE ON LANVIN

Hi dears!

Recently I wrote about some gorgeous Lanvin necklaces (to review blog post click here) and this is my take.

whatIjustlove.com

Whatijustlove.comLooks cool eh!.. I got it done at The Wired Up shop in Dubai Mall. A little shop on the way to the dancing fountains in Dubai Mall. They have them in Silver and Golden wire and can add different stones or shapes to it. I loved this turquoise shiney stone and we mixed it with the white for extra cuteness.

Luv,

Lil

GET GAUDI-ING!!

Recently I got invited to a new shop opening. I have seen the store getting ready in Dubai Mall and it was a nice surprise when I received the invitation from the PR agency. Thanks Heena!!

By the way, there is another shop in Dubai Festival City in case you live in the other part of town, so get gaudi-ing to one or the other. The little geek in me wants to share that Gaudi comes from Gaudere in latin… meaning Joy.. Ok,and a super famous spanish architect – soul of Barcelona- has also the same name ( have you ever been in the Holy Family Church?). Behind the name there is happiness and beauty.

The store breaths all that, it is very nice and the clothes are vibrant, full of colours – specially greens, turquoises, yellows, fucsias, blacks and whites.. they had a small runway organised and were showing the present collection. I fell in love with this black jumpsuit!

Whatijustlove.com

As an italian brand they also have shoes and bags.. well, no more coments, you know I am crazy about these babies.

DSC_0038 whatijustlove.com

The clothes are casual, fresh, very comfy and femenine, although they also have a section for our better halves. The style is young and smart, effortlessly cool..

LEOPARD ROARRRR

Hi dears,

Wherever you look this days you can see this print and it looks goorrrgeous. I used to perceive it as ‘too wild for this baby” but now I love it… Maybe it is because once everybody has it on, it looks less dangerous.

I need to get me one of these..

HOW DO I GET A JOB IN DUBAI?- SERIES. PART3.

Ok, so by now you have a Linkedin profile -even though it still might be basic- and now you can start being social.

You can invite your friends, colleagues at university, at work, at school, neighbours… All your contacts. That way you will start creating a little community… you never know where from a referral for a job might come and it might happen to you too that I have friends for the longest time and I didn’t know what were they doing professionally until we got connected through Linkedin. There are synergies that you might not be aware of.

Once you have all your contacts invited, you can start looking for groups that are interesting professionally to you. One important thing, Linkedin is professional, it is not Facebook, it is not Twitter… it is a social platform for professionals, so keep the etiquette and post things that could be relevant or interesting to your job/ sector or similar. No holiday picture here, ok? Unless you are a Lonely Planet editor of course. No pictures of the family gathering either. As a rule, just think that your future employer might be seeing you and that you have other social networks for you to put that type of content.

If you are looking for a job, in your extract there is a way to publish it. A brief note at the very beginning saying “looking for new horizons” or “looking for new opportunities”… that will send the message to whoever sees your profile. Careful though, if you are still working somewhere else and you add your colleagues at work or boss. They will also receive the message.

Getting back to the groups. If you are looking for a job in Dubai, there are some groups that could be interesting:

  • Dubai Recruitment
  • Wizeefa
  • Gulf
  • Gulf recruitment
  • Bayt.com

These are some of the local ones that could interest you. Some of them are selective so you might need to wait for their approval. My suggestion is that you look in the search box within Linkedin, using the drop down menu going into “groups”. Use keywords like “Dubai jobs”, or “UAE jobs” or if you are looking for a particular sector like fashion “Dubai Fashion jobs” or in construction use keywords like “Dubai Construction jobs”.. be creative and look around for the groups that might help your search or you keeping abreast of the news of your sector. The maximum amount of groups you can be part of is 50. Take that into account in case you need to be selective.

I now leave you busy looking for groups and contacts to get “linked in”.

More to come in the next post of the series.

Lots of luv,

Lil
