Mary Katrantzou

She is hardworking, imaginative and with such a down to earth personality that you have to fall in love with her and her pieces of ART.

For real, I have always liked Mary Katrantzou, the joy behind her pieces, the self confidence in her smile and that easy happy feeling about her personality. In Stylist Arabia super Cressida (a journalist I like a lot) did a special edition about her .. Maria, Maria.. Like that Carlos Santana song..

In this issue and some extra research in Mr Google, I learnt a lot about Mary Katrantzou. Let me share it with you.

  • This coming season s/s 2016 is inspired in a movie called Time of the Gypsies and it is about the Balkans and the Romani culture.
  • Mary Katrantzou has a good friend called Sabine G, a jewelry designer. She married with a gorgeous cape from Schiaparelli couture.. It is so Dali, so El Greco, so religious,..so from my own roots, that I dreamt about that cape!
  • You guessed it.. with that surname she is of Greek origin!. but she lives mostly in London. Her mama is an interior designer and her father trained in Textile Engineering. (the print love might be coming from here!).
  • She has some very colorful bags that my friend Marta would love.. why? because Martita is all about small bags, the smaller the better.. and this one is just cute, small and full of color and personality. Check it out. The Mini MVK bag.

Mary Katrantzou

  • We knew about her crazy funky prints.. but these dresses are not to be missed as now they are iconic..
    • the Typewriter from a/w 2012.
    • the lampshade skirts from s/s 2011
    • the Pencil Cage with real pencils from a/w 2012
    • the Dam C coat with plastic embroidery and a foam waist and a matching foam clutch from a/w 2015.
    • the Jewel tree with velvet and silk, swarovskis and embellishments from a/w 2011.
    • the Expandit printed silk dress with swarovskis.

Mary Katrantzou

  • She studied first Architecture, from there jumped to Fashion at Central Saint Martins.
  • Mary Katrantzou is the queen of prints. The kings are the duo from Peter Pilotto.
  • Only 6 years after launching, she won the Vogue Fashion Fund. Now she is close to open her standalone shop.
  • She travels a lot, her agenda is insane.
  • Mary Katrantzou makes decisions on instinct but tries not to second guess her designs, otherwise insecurity will arise.
  • She splits designers in 2 major categories: the ones that edit and the ones that have their own handwriting.
  • Mary Katrantzou has a very pretty vision of the fashion sector,.. for example praises the feminine camaraderie and she doesn’t feel you have to ¨be cool and thin¨to be in fashion, .. are they maybe cliches, Mary is just very lucky or was she just being politically correct?
  • Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift, Lupita, Keira Knightley etc wore her designs.

Mary Katrantzou is a real inspiration for me. It is the consummation of a lot of effort, a good instinct and a flooding creativity… and on top of that she seems such a good person!

If there is a designer you like and you can not find in the blog, drop me an email and we can feature him or her with pleasure.

FASHION FORWARD 2015 DESIGNER : AIISHA RAMADAN

Hi dears,

In case you didn’t know her as yet, let me introduce you to Aiisha Ramadan, the designer, the fashion guru in this side and in the other side of the Atlantic Ocean ( actually also on the other side of the Pacific Ocean too!.. L.A.).

She has dressed some of those celebrities every designer dreams to dress.. Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Teron, Paris Hilton, Raya Abichared.. and even a blogger fellow of mine.. Simone Heng. And all this, in really a very short time. That is due to what I call – either you have it, either you don’t -Talent.

Born in Lebanon, she followed her instinct and launched her brand AIISHA in 2006. Ever since, she has won a lot of prizes and awards. The one that I find cooler ..when she was named as one of the 30 Most Awesome Women in the Arab World in 2009 ( Yallah!)  and at the recent Women Leaders UAE2015 she won in the category of Contemporary Fashion designer. There is many more..kind of like karma.. She dresses the beautiful people going to the Oscars, the Grammy’s etc..and all that effort to make them shine, pays back.

Aiisha Ramadan will be showing her collection in this coming Fashion Forward (Register if you havent already. This year is from the 10 to the 13th of April). The collection is called Queen of Scotts and let me tell you it is simply beautiful and clean. The silhouettes are straight, embracing the models bodies and to me, they are very elegant and timeless. She picked strong colors: Purple, reds, blues, blacks, greens.. all in perfect harmony with the embellishments. Not too much, not too little.. just perfect.

Here you have some of the pics of this gorgeous collection.. Let me know your thoughts. Do you like them? When would you use them? Which one is your favorite?

Lots of Luv,

Araceli

FINALLY URBAN STREET STYLE IN DUBAI.. At SOLE DXB

Hi dears!!

This last weekend at the site where our awaited D3 -Dubai Design District- is being built there was a rather unconventional event. What made it different was that, for once ,it was not totally glamorous and bling bling! It was street style but not with high heels and Gucci bags in the middle of Dubai Marina.. It was urban street style as in New York, London or Madrid ( yep!  we also have!).

V. I. S: Very Important Sneakers

The total king of the event were the sneakers.. all over, there were shops selling or just displaying them. The other king was the sun.. high up on Friday morning and we were all missing some shade. At the Ray Ban booth we even helped a girl that was feeling dizzy because of too much sun and heat.

Me and my partner in crime, Maria Elena,  walked all the booths.. we saw the shoes, the sneakers, the clothes, the bags, the sunnies,  the bicycles, the puma shop, the food stalls, the caps, the Minis.. I love the Minis, and the reinvention of the gipsy van using them was so cool!

WWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMWWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COM URBAN STREET STYLEUrban Art

There were some graffiti artists working to give the total alternative urban look to the event.. Remi Rough was working on a quite high wall and needed a lift to create his abstract griffitis. Antoine Tavaglione or Tava was having fun with a pink Garfield close to our soles.. we also had fun as you can see!

WWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMWWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMBooths & more

Right in the center, there was a basketball field where people could play and also areas to skateboard around. The shops where hosted in containers, versatile, mobile, easy to transport and with the total urban look. The Puma and the Reebok were my favorites. The Puma because of the bikes. The Reebok one because it was bringing all the nostalgia back to me.. see why?.. Who didn’t have one of these babies in our teenager years?

WWW.WHATIJUSTLOVE.COMMy thoughts

As usual I have some comments on Sole DXB.. The price was ok ( 50 Dhs) but it was quite difficult to reach. If you do not have a car with an updated GPS, all I can say, is Good luck!. The D3 is all mystery for me and I really wanted to see the insides and heart of the Design district but all of it is blocked as it is still in construction. I understand the restriction to enter as there is still a lot of works going on and it would be a liability and a risk to allow visitors in. As it was not as ready, I would have maybe chosen a different location.. closer to Dubai.

The sun and the heat was an issue. For next year please some “sunbrellas” or some more shade. Water and drinks were available for free and that was a big plus!. People were nice and ambiance was really great. There were supposed to be talks, but they were delayed and we decided that we will skip them because the place looked really “in the process” and we were not sure how long would it take to get finished. Same thing happened with The Level Shoe District.. Not even close to ready by the time we left.

I know we know that all the visitors to any venue or event in Dubai tend to come late ( actually very late), but I still find it too bad that the organizers are not ready when they are supposed to.

Well, that is all for now. If you have any questions or comments you would want to add, please feel free in the comment section.

Lots of luv,

Araceli

My new Turkish Telkari earrings .. Thanks Elianne!

Turkish Telkari Earrings- What I just loveHi dears,

Elianne has been a contributor to my passion for earrings from around the world and she bought me these classic lovelies in her last trip to Turkey recently.

They are handcrafted in silver wire using a technique called Telkari and are sold under the brand Seyahan. You know me, the researcher ( CSI- Dubai!) … and I found some info about this very old technique.

A Bit of History

“Archaeological finds in ancient Mesopotamia indicate that filigree was incorporated into jewelry since 3,000 BC. Specific to the city of Midyat in Mardin Province in upper Mesopotamia, a form of filigree using silver and gold wires, known as “telkari”, was developed in the 15th Century. To this day, expert craftsmen in this region continue to produce fine pieces of telkari.”

Well, that’s what the Wikipedia says.. and I believe it!- For some reason, whatever Google or Wiki says stands as totally true to me.

These particular earrings are coming from that city: Mydiat, from an Syriac orthodox family workshop, and what they have been doing for generations is to weld the 925 silver wire and twist it until it looks like this delicate lacework. It amazes me the work and the tradition behind it. .. 3000 years Before Christ.. wow!

Thanks Elianne !! My earrings collection just got upgraded thanks to you and your good taste!. I love my new Turkish Telkari earrings!! Now I will feel like Helena of Troy or Nefertiti when I am wearing them.!! Lol.. So full of history! You hear!

Lots of luv,

Leli

A GLAMBOX SITUATION

Hi dears!

Today is 5th of April and my security – concierge – smiley guy that helps me with doors and bags when super loaded, tells me with a smirk.- Miss, I have something for you.- I am subscribed to tons of magazines so I thought it was that. But noooo, this month I received my first Glambox at home!! I was so excited I couldn’t wait to be up in the apartment.

This concept is amazing, it is like any other subscription but you get instead beauty products.. all of them fantastic and glamorous. How I got to know about this treat? Last month’s Glambox was an exclusivity with Nivea and I LUV Nivea, so they called me for a short video. Check it here, love, like and share as much as you can.

YouTube Preview Image

It was fun, fun, fun.. and it is that I learnt all details about Glambox. You pay between 71 and 80 Dhs per month depending on the package you choose and once a month you get your Glambox delivered at your doorstep. I love to receive stuff and this feels like someone is reading your mind and putting all together in a pinky package for you.

Check out what comes in this April’s Glambox.. I did a funky video with all of them on Instagram .. Lol.

YouTube Preview Image
  • 2 sachets of Herbline Essentials- with Aloe vera and Honey Hydra 5 gel.
  • 2 products of Caudalie- one day perfecting fluid cream with SPF15 and other hand and nail cream with antioxidants.
  • 1 palette of Inglot – silver colour!- Glam, Glam, Glam- with a mirror and a cute brush.
  • 1 big brush from Glambox – they have all the set available on the Glambox shop. 😉
  • 1 Sunscreen SPF30 from Hawaiian Tropic.
  • 1 Dove Body Cream with shea butter and vanilla.

Just this weekend I got to go to the beach on Friday and to the pool on Saturday.. What do I need? Sunscreen!! My Nivea sunspray is about to be finished so.. tachan! When that happens I will start the Hawaiian Tropic. I looooove the smell! It takes me back to my days in Jamaica.. Nostalgia is so bad!!

www.whatijustlove.com

Dove and I have been in love for already a number of years ( too many to count!) as I worked in the PR agency that started them in Spain (my best regards to the amazing team of Burson Marsteller now spread all over the world, muac.. love you guys!).  At that time we were testing the waters, trying to educate the population in the concept.. We would ask, ..What would you think if I tell you that you can have a moisturizer and a shower gel all in one without feeling greasy and actually cleaning? Same with the shampoo and moisturizer.. People couldn’t believe it initially. That account was fun, we did amazing stuff!. 🙂

I loved the product from day one and now I use most of the range -I need to mention the Dove hair fall rescue… blessings to whoever brought it up!!. Simone Heng helped me restock it as she is brand ambassador here in Dubai and adding to the fact that she is a great blogger, she is a super down to earth lovely person. Check her blog if you have a minute.

Herbline, Caudalie and Inglot are new to me but I will be testing them and sharing with you my thoughts.

The Glambox came also with some very cool vouchers:

  • Nstyle Voucher for a polish change.
  • A gift voucher of 500 Dhs from Wellbeing Medical Centre for a laser treatment or and Ultrasound cavitation treatment.

See my happy face.. I am going to try them all!! Nstyle I can already recommend and will you believe it!.. Just this week I was in Wellbeing Medical.. not for laser or cavitation but to get my neck fixed. Dr Gary Fitzgerald is my osteopath and my neck has this bad habit of getting stiff – I call it jiraffitis, doctors call it torticulis. So when you go, if you see him, say hi from me!

Luv,

Lil

WHAT THE OKRYUGWAN!!!

Oh! Wow! We know Dubai is a melting pot with people from all walks of life, countries, cultures and languages. If you follow me on Instagram you will know too that I am a foodie and I am keen on trying any cuisine, but this one.. Boy! It was a surprise! Great Surprise for my palate!

Some months ago my husband and me decided to start looking for new places to dine. We think the Bur Dubai, Deira and Karama areas will hold great secrets and we were just driving – no GPS- until we would find something eye catching and stop to give it a try. From this experiment, some times we had not the best results, but this one time I must say, I honestly enjoyed it.

The restaurant is called Okryugwan – dont ask me what it means, not a clue-  and it is inside one hotel -Royal Ascot or something similar. I am not sure where it is, but you can check it on Time Out Dubai, because there is not that many North Korean restaurants in the world (around 12 in our planet). It looks like these restaurants are operated by the North Korean Government to acquire foreign currency and to maintain the expenses of the embassies.

IMG_6830

Honestly, we decided on it because at the entrance there was a beautifully dressed lady. Lol! This is what happens when you let us decide! She was wearing the traditional korean dress in baby blue and she was all smiles. The dress is absolutely gorgeous!

I have this fetish of buying traditional dresses and earrings in my travels (or my husbands!). I never  or very rarely wear the dresses outside home but I feel I have a piece of the country and the culture. If any one of you have the chance to get one of these korean dresses, remember me!

The place is not the shiny gold and modern luxurious decor Dubai  has us accustomed to. It is pretty basic, feels like one of those chinese old restaurants back home. The food is very nice, but be aware, when it says spicy or hot, it really is.

The one thing you can not miss is the korean barbeque. It is very traditional and very yummy. In some other Korean restaurants they give you a plate of raw meat or fish and start the bbq, the cooking is for you to do.  The bbq is right at your own table. There is like a hole and inside it is the grill. At Okryugwan they do the bbq for you, so we had our gorgeous waitress show cooking for us.

Other thing I liked a lot were the dim sums. The pastry filled with chicken were delicious. I totally recommend you to try them. The soups were very nice too.. we choose one with kimchy – not knowing what it was really, but it looked like cabbage- here is when things got too hard to swallow. The flavour was very nice but it was really hot.  Spice is cumulative so the first spoons were ok, the rest were.. too much for me. 😉 (fire extinguisher situation)

Here you have my pics. If you go, let me know your thoughts.

Luv,

Lil

GET GAUDI-ING!!

Recently I got invited to a new shop opening. I have seen the store getting ready in Dubai Mall and it was a nice surprise when I received the invitation from the PR agency. Thanks Heena!!

By the way, there is another shop in Dubai Festival City in case you live in the other part of town, so get gaudi-ing to one or the other. The little geek in me wants to share that Gaudi comes from Gaudere in latin… meaning Joy.. Ok,and a super famous spanish architect – soul of Barcelona- has also the same name ( have you ever been in the Holy Family Church?). Behind the name there is happiness and beauty.

The store breaths all that, it is very nice and the clothes are vibrant, full of colours – specially greens, turquoises, yellows, fucsias, blacks and whites.. they had a small runway organised and were showing the present collection. I fell in love with this black jumpsuit!

As an italian brand they also have shoes and bags.. well, no more coments, you know I am crazy about these babies.

The clothes are casual, fresh, very comfy and femenine, although they also have a section for our better halves. The style is young and smart, effortlessly cool..

WHAT I JUST LOVE.. MY NEW SHOES!!!

Hello my dears,

Last week I went shopping and I found that Kurt Geiger has 50% discount on many models until the 31st of October. I like their shoes very much and found some beauties for my ravioli feet at very good price. 😉

They have some really beautiful shoes.Too bad that my feet are so small and not of all the discounted models they had my size. At the end the winner is:

la foto 2 www.whatijustlove.com

I took them already to the office and they looked great with a pencil skirt but the color and those studs make it lady like and rock and roll at the same time, so I am going to wear them with jeans and with my black cigarette pants. They are so versatile that, truth to be told, I can mix them with most of my wardrobe.

www.whatijustlove.com

My recommendation is to go and check what they have in store and take profit of the discount- 50% is not bad at all!!. I went to the shop in Dubai Mall- in front of the Level Shoe District, but they have all over UAE. And this is the link if you like to buy online. The discount is also available there.

I fell in love and so can you!

Luv,

Lil
